Workload replication serves as the core foundation for migration, DR and backup operations. Matters pioneered a patented replication methodology that operates at the filesystem layer, differing from traditional VMDK conversion or sector-level storage replication techniques. The platform comes in two distinct editions: one tailored for physical and virtual server environments, and another dedicated to Kubernetes cluster infrastructures.
RackWare points out that mainstream DR solutions from vendors including Zerto, Veeam, Commvault, alongside native tools such as VMware Site Recovery, typically rely on replication mechanisms tightly coupled with virtualization or hypervisor layers. In contrast, RackWare’s replication technology functions at the OS and filesystem level. This key design eliminates dependencies on source hypervisors and their native SDKs for workload migration and protection, freeing operations from restrictive rules of source and target environments.
The platform supports workload replication across all hypervisor types, public and private cloud platforms, and bare-metal servers. Its Kubernetes-enabled version also enables data replication between all mainstream Kubernetes distributions. Vendor lock-in measures designed to limit cross-platform workload mobility — including Broadcom’s recent removal of VMware VDDK functionality — have no impact on filesystem-level replication workflows.
While filesystem-level replication brings multiple technical advantages, cross-platform workload mobility has become RackWare’s primary business growth driver in recent periods.
SimplyBlock vs RackWare Comparison
Both solutions support business continuity and disaster recovery for Red Hat OpenShift environments and assist VMware-to-OpenShift migration scenarios, yet they operate at entirely different infrastructure layers. SimplyBlock delivers storage-level replication exclusively for clusters deployed on its own storage infrastructure. By comparison, RackWare SWIFT provides full workload-level replication, enabling migration and recovery of OpenShift applications on nearly all Kubernetes platforms, regardless of the underlying storage system.
As a core module of the RackWare Management suite, RackWare SWIFT runs externally to target clusters. RackWare is the optimal choice for cross-cloud, cross-Kubernetes-distribution and VMware-to-cloud application replication and failover, adapting to any existing storage configuration on target platforms.
RackWare and Datadobi both provide data migration capabilities but serve distinct use cases and are not interchangeable. RackWare migrates complete enterprise workloads, while Datadobi specializes in migrating unstructured files and object data, suiting different project scenarios such as VMware cloud migration and NetApp-to-Isilon NAS system upgrades.

Co-founded by Sash Sunkara and Todd Matters in 2009 in Santa Clara, California (later expanding to the San Jose and Fremont tech corridor), RackWare initially secured angel funding and focused narrowly on storage array management in partnership with LSI’s Engenio division. After the partnership terminated around 2011, the company pivoted its core business to hybrid cloud migration, disaster recovery and cross-environment workload mobility. Sunkara served as CEO until stepping down in 2019. Todd Matters remains an active co-founder and CTO, while Bryan Gobbett took office as CEO in the same year.
The company has completed angel, seed, Series A and Series B financing rounds plus multiple loan arrangements, raising total capital between $16 million and $23 million, with its latest confirmed funding activity taking place in 2021. Its investment backers include Signal Peak Ventures, Oquirrh Ventures, Osage Venture Partners, Royal Street Ventures, Frazier VC, Park City Angels, Run Ventures and Kickstart Seed Fund.
