Placing this infrequently‑accessed information on disk storage carries excessive cost, leaving tape as the only practical low‑cost‑per‑terabyte archival option. Competing approaches such as holographic storage remain in early‑phase development, while DNA‑based archival technology sits at an even more nascent stage; real‑world deployment is projected to take five to ten years or longer.

Observing this sustained long‑term market shift, Fujifilm is scaling its tape‑manufacturing footprint, targeting fiscal‑year‑2028 output at five‑fold the volume achieved in 2025.

The expansion will be supported by a ¥10‑billion ($63‑million) capital injection into its production facility located in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. Today’s LTO‑10 media delivers 40 TB raw capacity, expanding to 100 TB under a 2.5:1 compression ratio. The upcoming LTO‑11 standard will push raw capacity up to 70 TB, reaching 175 TB with compression.
